Resumen:

The family is the primary social circle to which an individual belongs, making siblings the first friends and life companions. This bond transforms as individuals grow and go through changes specific to the stage of development, they are in. Thus, during emerging adulthood, it has been observed that the time spent together between siblings decreases, but variables like closeness and trust increase, giving rise to more positive interactions in which they perceive similarities with each other. Each one learns from the other?s differences and builds complicity characterized by friendship, intimacy, caring for one another, which in turns help to cover up thru talking various topics of daily life. However, since the study of this relationship is almost nonexistent in Mexico, results obtained from a sample of Mexican emerging adults are presented and discussed. They show that aspects such as being an older or younger sibling, as well as being sisters or brothers, have significant effects on the levels of complicity and the topics they address with each other. Meanwhile, perceiving themselves as similar and complementary mediates the effect that closeness has on complicity through its various factors. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.
