Resumen:

The genus Entamoeba covers several amoebae that reside mainly in the human gastrointestinal tract, of which Entamoeba histolytica is responsible for causing intestinal amebiasis (IA) and amoebic liver abscess (ALA) in humans, leading to annual deaths of 100,000 worldwide. Through adhesion, contact dependent-lysis, and phagocytosis, E. histolytica invades host tissue and provokes acute inflammatory reaction that underlines the key molecular pathogenesis of amebiasis. The diagnosis of E. histolytica infection involves microscopic examination, serological tests, and molecular techniques. Although antiamebic drugs are currently available, the emergence of multidrug resistance E. histolytica phenotypes calls for alternative therapeutic compounds and effective vaccines for ultimate control of this important parasite. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd.
