Resumen:

Derived from the global energy crisis, microalgae have emerged as an alternative biomass with tremendous potential as a renewable and environmentally friendly biofuel feedstock as a rebuttal to climate change and global warming. Besides, microalgae bear potential as bio-cell factories in producing key industrial commodities, such as pigments, proteins, enzymes, biohydrogen, lipids, and bioethanol. These high-value-added bioproducts are a more cost-effective alternative to microalgae-based renewable energy under algal biorefinery. The current chapter introduces in-place process technologies for biofuels production, including microalgae biomass cultivation and harvesting technologies and conversion technologies from microalgal biomass to biofuels. This work compiles valuable knowledge that may promote cost-effective and efficient technology for biofuel generation from microalgae with an eye toward the future. Technical advancements, environmental challenges, and various bioproducts produced by third-generation biorefineries are also presented and discussed. Attention is given to transdisciplinary technical ways to convert algal biomass into fuels and biochemicals. © 2023 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
