Resumen:

A comprehensive and critical review on mathematical modelling of reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization is presented in this chapter. The modelling and simulation of RAFT polymerization of vinyl monomers has been achieved by using several numerical approaches. Most of the research studies available on the literature are based on the method of moments, kinetic Monte Carlo simulations, and use of the software Predici. These approaches are described, and their strengths and weaknesses assessed. Our critical analysis of the literature includes most of the published contributions of the past two decades. The cases modelled include synthesis of homopolymers with narrow molar mass distributions, synthesis of polymer networks by crosslinking/branching reactions of vinyl/divinyl monomers, microwave-assisted polymerizations, synthesis of copolymers with controlled chain composition distributions via semibatch operation modes, dispersion polymerizations carried out in supercritical carbon dioxide, continuous stirred tank reactors, and miniemulsion polymerizations. © 2022 WILEY-VCH GmbH, Boschstr. 12, 69469 Weinheim, Germany.
