Resumen:

Analytical chemistry involves techniques capable of detecting pollutants in environmental matrices to comply with international legislation. These techniques could be taken to a new technological frontier by designing innovative and small-scale systems such as lab-on-a-chip (LOC) technologies for the environmental pollutant analysis on a real-time basis. LOC systems are composed basically of four units: sample inlet, processing, analyzing, and data process. Every part of the system is evolving rapidly with new materials and technology and therefore integrating those parts into an efficient single portable platform is complicated. Design of LOC systems must incorporate 3D-printing technology for manufacturing and wireless communication for autonomous devices. Development and commercialization of LOC systems must consider low-cost manufacturing methods and inexpensive and flexible materials. © 2021 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
