Resumen:

This chapter describes the extreme preoccupation with safeguarding the positive face of an interlocutor, which pervades Mexican verbal interaction. It shows that there is a tendency, supported explicitly or implicitly by a number of studies, to conceive the Mexican style of interaction as one oriented toward work on the hearer?s positive face. D. Martineau?s data suggest that, compared to French subjects, Mexicans pay extreme attention to work on the positive face of the interlocutor, which is reflected in various ways in norms that regulate verbal and nonverbal behavior in dinner invitation settings. J. C. Felix-Brasdefer remarks that Mexicans seem to conform to an important social norm concerned with keeping up appearances before the others in the group, and concludes that affiliation and group face are apt notions for describing politeness interaction in Mexican society. Diana Bravo investigates some of the differences and similarities between the communicative styles of Mexican, Spanish, and Swedish businessmen in a training course on negotiation techniques. © 2007 by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Inc.
