Resumen:

The Semi-Arid Zone of Querétaro and Hidalgo (SAZQH), central México, is a relevant place in terms of richness, endemism, and threatened species of Cactaceae. The region has been inhabited and transformed along the ages; modifications include regional infrastructure milestones that have done irreversible damages to key, emblematic Cactaceae species. This complex reality is shaped also by the high levels of poverty and marginalization of many communities, and to historical illegal poaching of plants. In this tangled scenario, actions aimed to foster conservation face great challenges. This article offers the reader a panorama of the Cactaceae species in the SAZQH, described through three emblematic communities, and illustrates, with a selected group of examples, the damages suffered by the endemic species and some of the ecological, biological and cultural implications of their loss. This article then explains the comprehensive actions of the Cadereyta Regional Botanic Garden (CRBG), which, during the last 30years, has been an obligatory point of reference for the conservation of arid flora in the ?Tolimán? quadrant of the Chihuahuan Desert. © 2022 Elsevier Inc.
