Resumen:

This work studies the combination of seismic effects on structures caused by the action of two horizontal orthogonal components of the ground motion. The main objective is to show an analysis procedure based on the usual response spectrum methods, more reliable than those existing ones (SRSS, 100%+30% or 40% and CQC3 rules). The procedure exposed takes into account exclusively the characteristics of the soft-soil ground motion. By using the theory of random vibrations, some analytical expressions are developed to combine both horizontal orthogonal seismic effects in order to estimate the elastic bi-directional peak response. With the fully bi-directional elastic "step by step" analysis of some structural models using earthquakes records of soft soil, it is verified that in some cases the proposed procedure (?procedure) is more reliable and precise than the existing ones. The ? procedure takes into account the type of response in terms of the direction of its components (orthogonal or collinear). No one of the existing rules does it, and it is showed that this is one of the most important variables related with the combination of the orthogonal seismic effects. Also, the ? procedure considers the angle of earthquake incidence. Copyright © (2006) by Earthquake Engineering Research Institute.
