Resumen:

The presence of Spanish in the Americas has resulted in the mutual influence between this language and the native languages established in the different territories of America. One of the clearest examples of this influence is the presence of the Indo-American lexicon in Spanish. This chapter explains what can be considered as indigenism in a sociolexical framework and how many of these are active in different varieties of Latin American Spanish. In particular, three lines of research about the lexicon of indigenous origin are addressed. The first of them seeks to establish geolinguistic patterns, the second considers the linguistic vitality of indigenisms, and the third suggests analyzing the particular history of certain lexical items, such as huachicol and quinua.
