Resumen:

Although honey bees (Apis mellifera) have been managed for thousands of years, most people do not know about the benefits of using their products in food. Honey is one of those products to which many uses and properties are attributed, but honey is not the only hive product; other products such as propolis, pollen, and royal jelly, can be obtained from bee hives. Currently, many studies are aimed at investigating the pharmacological properties and benefits of natural products to human health, leading to the growing development of nutraceuticals and functional foods from them. The concept of functional food refers to foods that have the capability of promoting better physiological or psychological health compared to traditional foods. In this capacity, it has been shown that hive products contribute positively to the maintenance of good health and well-being, as well as to ameliorate chronic diseases. Here we present a literature review of research conducted on the properties and benefits of hive products (honey, propolis, pollen, and royal jelly) for human nutrition and health, some of which have been used in traditional medicine for the control of certain diseases. According to the reports analyzed, it can be concluded that hive products have therapeutic properties that may help prevent and control various illnesses, so it may be advisable to consume them routinely. It is also important to highlight that much more research with humans in clinical trials is needed to confirm the properties and benefits of hive products. © 2021 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
