Resumen:

Solid biomass contributes between 10% and 14% of the world?s primary energy supply and is a key fuel in the global energy transition toward the use of renewable energy inputs and with fewer impacts on the planet. This chapter deals with agricultural, agroindustrial, and forest residues that do not compete neither with the use of the soil nor with the production of food. The use of solid biomass as a fuel to generate electricity and process heat has been increasing in recent years, driven by the problems related to climate change, environmental protection and the valorization of the diverse organic residues. This chapter provides a definition and presents a classification of solid biomass as well as its main uses in the generation of heat and electricity, being firewood the most widely used on a small scale for heating and food cooking. It describes the main technologies of energetic use of solid biomass for the generation of heat and power, which are mature and available in the market such as combustion, co-combustion, cogeneration, incineration, and some such as gasification technology that has the best performance and lowest emissions, but still presents significant challenges to increase its economic viability, as well as opportunity niches and investment costs. © 2019 Elsevier Inc.
