Resumen:

New economic housing in Mexico is mainly constructed using low-rise reinforced concrete wall structures. Walls are thin (75- to 100-mm wide) and lightly reinforced, made of either normal weight, cellular or self-compacting concrete. Most walls are cast-in-place. Due to these characteristics, current seismic resistant design provisions are not applicable. To develop analysis, design and construction guidelines a research program has been underway over the past 3 years. Thirty three full-scale reinforced concrete walls have been tested under lateral loads, while maintaining constant vertical stresses equivalent to 0.25 MPa. Experimental variables have included type of loading (monotonic vs. cyclic), type of concrete (normal weight, cellular and self compacting), aspect ratio, opening size, type of reinforcement (steel bars with fy = 420 MPa and welded-wire mesh with fy = 500 MPa) and the amount of wall shear reinforcement (0, ?50 and ?100 percent of minimum wall reinforcement ratio as required in ACI 3 1 8-05, i.e. 0.0025). Welded-wire mesh is characterized by low ductility (?su ? 3%). The aim of the paper is to discuss experimental results and to compare them with several analytical Models available in the literature and with the model developed for this study. © 2008 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
