Some hydrocarbon reservoirs are associated with deep aquifers, producing a mixture of hot brine and oil. The invasion of this brine into the oil reservoir has a negative influence on hydrocarbon extraction. Brine migration occurs at temperatures around 160 degrees C and at high pressures of over 128.4 MPa. Relative permeabilities and saturations are affected by this temperature. Oil-water dynamic viscosities are diminished, affecting the displacement of both fluids. Extracted water can even exceed oil production, becoming a very expensive engineering problem. The high concentrations of dissolved salts and minerals in wells of the Bellota-Jujo, Mexico reservoir, indicate the presence of salt domes underlying the oil field. This brine invasion involves typical geothermal phenomena coupled to the extraction of oil with salt dome deformation. The geomechanics of the stresses and strains was modeled with finite elements computing the maximum deformation. For the coupled two-phase fluid flow a numerical model was developed, which depends only on oil saturation. A 1D stationary solution is deduced that allows approximating the unknown oil-water contact zone.
