Resumen:

This chapter outlines the use of a single-session and brief counseling with an asthmatic child's mother, Mrs. Fabiola. Single-session therapy is different from traditional counseling as the latter involves an ongoing process where trust develops over time between the client and therapist. A recurring theme during the therapy was that she must keep absolute cleanliness in the place where the child stays because "ultimately that is the role of women, while the role of men, such as that of [her husband], is to work and maintain the household". The therapist was constantly empowering Mrs. Fabiola to elucidate that her beliefs and catastrophic thoughts would not help the sick child, and positive responses to the disease were generated through successive approximations. Family (and cultural) processes have a powerful influence on health and pediatric asthma control. The role of the caregiver and the caregiver-child interactions influence the manifestations of pediatric asthma. © 2015 by the American Counseling Association. All rights reserved.
