Resumen:

Non-linear instabilities, including voltage collapse, occurring in a power system due to changes in the reactive power demand are studied in this paper. The analysis is based on the nonlinear dynamical theory of bifurcations. The presence of static and dynamic bifurcations is determined by the stability analysis of the power system equilibrium points. It is shown the relation between Hopf bifurcations and the dynamics of voltage collapse. In addition, it is shown the application of a Static VARs Compensator (SVC) to damp out sustained voltage oscillations for a given level of reactive power demand as well as increasing the maximum point of system's loadability.
