Resumen:

Mexican legislation mandates to consider suitability assessments for the execution of regional development projects. Also, Mexican law orders public participation when assessing suitability of a given region. This paper reports relevant findings with respect to legal, conceptual, organizational, and methodological aspects for conducting suitability assessments for coastal development projects in Mexico. These findings originate from suitability assessments in regions identified as priorities for the development of aquaculture and tourism. The evaluations were carried out as part of a technical cooperation accord between the Mexican government and the secretary general of the organization of American States.
