Resumen:

This chapter describes the phenomena known as catalytic promiscuity: the ability of the enzymes to catalyze more than one type of chemical reaction in their active site. The chapter presents some of the basic characteristics of catalytic promiscuity as well as some of the applications it has in different fields, such as: understanding the appearance and evolution of new catalytic activities in nature, the artificial modification of enzyme activities in the laboratory, and the better comprehension of enzyme mechanisms. © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
